Uganda is beginning to experience signs of the second wave of Covid-19, an indicator that could spell doom if the population does not heed the set guidelines meant to combat the spread of the deadly disease.
According to Dr. Monica Musenero, a senior epidemiologist and the presidential advisor on epidemics, some of the indicators of the second wave include growing cases of COVID-19 infections, as well as change in weather patterns.
The health ministry had for a long time, since the beginning of the year registered zero to tens of Covid-19 cases in the daily update.
But, the clusters of community infections being registered as of Tuesday had particularly been in homesteads and now schools.
Musenero has also highlighted the current partial lockdown in neighbouring Kenya as another indicator of Uganda’s second wave, given the close relations between both countries.
Musenero says Uganda’s case count could double or in the worst case scenario, triple its current Covid-19 case count, given the laxity experienced among the population.
A total of 41,204 people have tested positive in Uganda so far. Of these, 40,779 have recovered while 337 have died.
