A 7-Year-old Congolese refugee who went missing from Kyangwali refugee settlement area in Kyangwali sub county Kikuube district has been found dead.
The body of Safi Mwiringire, a resident of Kyabitaka village in the Kyangwali refugee settlement area was found dumped in a sweet potato garden with fresh wounds on the head and face. The body was discovered on Friday evening.
Mariam Mukamaana, the child’s mother says her son went missing on February 16, 2021 from within Kyangwali Refugee settlement area as he went to play with his colleagues.
After waiting for her child to return home in vain, she reported a case of missing person at Kyangwali Police station on February 17, 2021.
However, on Friday, as the search for the child intensified, the body was found dumped in a potato garden a few meters from the child’s home.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region Police spokesperson says one suspect has so far been apprehended to help police with further investigations. The suspect is 14-year-old Congolese refugee who is also attached to Kyangwali refugee settlement area.
He says the suspect was last seen with the murdered child on the fateful day when he disappeared from home. Hakiza says upon his arrest, the suspect led a team of detectives to where he killed the child and dumped his body in a potato garden before covering the body with grass.
According to Hakiza, the suspect used a sharp object to hit the child in the head and face. The suspect was immediately whisked to Kyangwali Police station where he is being detained.
The body of the child has been handed over to the relatives for burial after postmortem had been done.
