The assistant commissioner for cooperatives Robert Mpakibi Waiswa has attributed the increasing collapse of co-operative unions in Uganda to weak primary societies, lack of diversification and poor leadership among others.
According to Waiswa, primary societies are the foundation of the co-operative unions adding that whenever these societies are week the unions will collapse.
He made the remarks Wednesday afternoon while officiating, the inauguration of the new board members of Bunyoro Growers Co-operative Union at Haibiri in Masindi Municipality. Philemon Rugajua Bagada is the board chairman deputized by Wilson Baruhanga while Exvia Kamanyire is the union treasurer. The union has over 200 members.
Mpakibi says there is a need for union leader to review and strengthen primary societies if the country is to have strong co-operative unions. He also called on co-operative unions to embrace diversification as they carry out their business to tap in the fluctuating market.
