Survivors of Kiryandongo Attack Cry Out for Help

Three survivors of last week’s clashes in Karuma Town council, Kiryandongo district have cried out for help.

The clashes in Opeche village, Diima Sub County last week left three people dead who had migrated and settled in the area more than five years ago.

Yasin Bakati, Rosa Afiyako and Safi Ayumani were hacked to death. They also critically injured Safina Chandiru who is currently admitted in critical condition nursing severe wounds at Kiryandongo General Hospital.  She sustained deep cuts on the head, face, both hands and stomach.

According to police, unknown people raided the homes of the deceased persons and hacked them to death before they varnished to yet an unknown destination. They accused the deceased persons of being behind the disappearance and murder of their young brother identified as Innocent Opio.

Opio disappeared from their home on February 4, 2021, and later his body was found floating on river Karuma near the construction site of Karuma Hydro Power Dam on February 9, 2021.

After retrieving the body, his relatives rushed and attacked the deceased persons accusing them of being behind the death of Opio hacking the trio to death.

Mohammad Ofuraga, who is one of the survivors admitted at Arua Hospital, says that his houses were set ablaze during the clashes. He also says that his grinding machine, which was fetching him money every day was also destroyed, leaving him with no source of income.

Safina Candiru, another survivor who was transferred to Arua over the weekend from Kiryandongo said she is undergoing immense pain from the cuts inflicted on her head by the attackers and appeals to government to come to their aid.

Following the attack, the Police in Kiryandongo arrested 38 suspects. The suspects whose names have been concealed for fear of jeopardizing police investigations were arrested on Thursday and Friday from various parts of Kiryandongo district.
